It is amazing what a bit of paint can do to an area. The Dave Hume Pool mural is now completed, and looks stunning.
Local artist Shane Walker, from Waihi Beach has battled cold southerlies and rain to complete his first mural painted with a spray gun. The four images of people swimming was designed to enhance and add character to a part of Katikati that was lacking in a bit of pride and colour.
The project was a joint effort between Katikati Open-Air Art, the Dave Hume Pool Trust and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council through the local Community Board, each sharing the costs. Open-Air Art were approached early 2013 and asked if a mural could be produced, so just over two and a half years later, mural number 59 has been added to the collection.
Shane is a young up and coming artist, who has also completed another mural for the Council, when he created the wave mural on the new north end toilet and changing block at Waihi Beach.
Of added interest to the mural, is the image of local swimmer Libby Bradley, a Katikati College student, who has gained national titles in swimming and surf lifesaving.
The mural was unveiled and blessed by the Mayor Ross Paterson, and local Kaumatua.
